I remember the moment I got hooked on Astronomy really well. I must have been about 11 or 12 yrs old. My Dad had come home with an old cabinet from my gran, and a load of old books too. We all rooted through the books and I found a little pocket book "The Universe" by Patrick Moore. After reading through several pages I was hooked. One winter evening coming home quite late, I tilted my head back and looked up at the sky. What an amazing sight, all those stars! It got me thinking, if each of those stars were actually a sun, then there was a possibility that each sun had planets. Surely in all that vastness of space and all those stars there must be planets like ours, with people on them looking across the vastness of space back at us. I studied more. Every astronomy book in the school library. However, the more I studied the more the posibility of space travel and life on other planets became less feasable. The distance to travel just to our nearest star, if we could travel at the speed of light would take four years. We'd only just managed to travel at the speed of sound. Then there was Einstien's theory of relativity, that the faster you travelled the more time would slow down for you but years could be passing by for the ones back on earth. Thanks then to my history teacher, can't remeber her name but she was great at playing the piano, she made assemblies different and she brought interest to our lessons that had nothing to do with History. She told us about Einsteins theory's and about the film "Planet of the Apes". At the same time all this was happening "Star Trek" the original series was airing in the UK. Suddenly, I wanted to be an astronaut, I wanted to go into space or even work anywhere in the field of astronomy. My dad bought me a telescope and he even took us for a day out to Jodrell Bank. I was clever, but not clever enough. I struggled with English as my mum was Italian (it was us that taught her the language). I did really poorly in my exams except for French and Art and I ended up going to Art College instead. My ambitions of working in the field of science faded but my love of science fiction became stronger. I also loved to read.My favourite books to this day are H.G.Wells "The Time Machine" and "War of the Worlds". The original films didn't do the stories justice and only lately have the stories been brought properly to life in the new film versions. Also at the time, I remember there were lots of UFO sightings and I remeber reading about the cover up at Roswell and Area 52. It was then that my uncle introduced me to a book by Erich Von Daniken, who was shaking things up a little, because of his theories about our past and God. He was an Archeologist and he had made studies of the ancient Egyptians, the Mayans and the Astecs, amongst other ancient civilisations. His first book was called "Chariots of the Gods" and it was based on his theory that the Earth in our past had been visited by Aliens. What was controvercial at the time was that he believed the bible to be a diary of the events that occured when our planet was discovered by these "aliens". He had made intensive studies of the pyramids in Egypt, the ancient temples in South America, even cave drawings. He explained how the Pyramids were aligned in a way that if seen from the a high altitude they would be a perfect copy of the constellation Orion. As well as lots of other fascinating things he also mentioned the invention of the sundial and how they had managed to measure the distance from the moon to the earth. Some years later Von Daniken was branded a fraud and his work was discredited but Archeologists today are still finding links betweeen the Pyramids and the constellation of Orion.
